DESCRIPTION:Simonholt is very pleased to announce that The Roy Styffe Quartet will\nbe playing at the Simonholt Restaurant\, Aug. 2nd. 7:30pm. Undoubtedly\,\nthis band contains some of North America’s best players; the\nextraordinary Roy Styffe (saxes)\, the amazing Rob Cheramy (guitar)\, the\nexceptional Steve Wallace (bass) and the stick perfect Kelby McNayr\n(drums). We are so excited about this band that we are recording the\nshow with a view to an live album release. \nRegarded by many as one of the finest improvisers in Canada.\nMulti-instrumentalist (saxophone/clarinet/flute) Roy Styffe has been\nwowing audiences for over 30 years. He has played with the greatest\nnames in Canadian jazz and continues to push the envelope of excellence\nin the world of improvisation. \nRoy has been active as a leader\, performer and composer for the past\ntwenty five years. DESCRIPTION:Simonholt Restaurant is very pleased to announce that The\nexceptionally talented Miranda Sage Quartet will be playing for us\, July\n12th. 7:300pm. Miranda will be touring her latest album release. \nMiranda’s Quartet features the Award winning Mike Allen (tnr. sax)\, Dr.\nTony Genge (keys) and Ken Lister (bass)\nMiranda studied jazz vocals with Jordan\, Jay Clayton\, Louise Rose and\nseminal British jazz singer Norma Winstone who praises Miranda’s singing\non her latest album as “very flexible and natural.” \nBorn in England and raised in Victoria\, B.C. in a musical family that\nincludes uncle Nick Newall of the Kinks\, Miranda was taught piano by her\nmother before she started school. Sage played lute\, harp\, clarinet and\nalto sax in school then took up guitar and a professional career\nincluding tours of Europe\, England and the U.S. in her 20’s. \nShe has performed with Hugh Fraser’s Big Band\, the Port Townsend Jazz\nFestival Big Band\, and Swiftsure Big Band. Sage’s vocals were also\nshowcased at Scotland’s Mid Argyle Annual Gala\, Isle of Wight Jazz Divas\nFestival\, Alberta’s Beneath the Arches concert series\, multiple\nappearances at the TOSH concert series in Qualicum Beach\, and Victoria\nInternational Jazz Festival. Miranda and Don Thompson toured throughout\nwestern Canada. DESCRIPTION:We are very pleased to announce that the Ryan Oliver Quartet will be\nplaying for us at the Simonholt Restaurant\, Sunday 14th June at 7:30pm.\nRyan’s theme for the show is\, “Tunes People Like”. What that means is\nthat you will be going home with memorable tunes\, like “Can’t Buy Me\nLove”\, set on fire by this Quartet and ringing in your ears! \nThese tunes make up the body of Ryans next album\, shortly to be\nrecorded. Juno Nominated Ryan needs very little introduction to any jazz\nears in Canada\, especially for his work with the internationally\nrespected Shuffle Demons and has worked with some of the leading players\nin Canada\, New York and the Netherlands.\nRyans musical prowess is matched by his academic achievements\, holding a\nMasters degree in music from Rutgers University. As director and founder\nof the West Coast Jazz Academy in Victoria\, he imparts his knowledge to\naspiring saxophonists across Vancouver Island\, directs both student and\nadult jazz combos and runs an annual week long saxophone camp. \nBeyond performance and education\, Oliver has contributed to the jazz\ncommunity as an adjudicator for prestigious scholarships and festivals\,\nincluding the Fraser MacPherson Scholarship.. He has been recognized as\na nominee for numerous awards including the Prix De Jazz at the Montreal\nJazz Festival\, a Juno nomination and the Western Canadian Jazz musician\nof the Year in 2022. \nThe band features Ryan Oliver (saxes)\, Dr. Tony Genge (keys)\, Ken Lister\n(bass.) and Joe Poole (drms.).
